As a first-generation college student, navigating the university application process was initially  a daunting and unfamiliar challenge. Today, as I approach my senior year at the University of  Southern California, applying to medical school, I reflect on the profound impact of AKALA.  Thanks to their support, I have received multiple First-Generation scholarships and research  grants and have been awarded leadership roles and writing accolades.

The journey to this point has required significant effort, but the approach AKALA instilled in me  from the age of 14 has been a steadfast anchor. The guidance I received over the years leading up to my college applications was invaluable, particularly during  the drafting of my personal statement. Overwhelmed by the task of condensing my life into 650  words, I remember the pivotal moment when Perry and Barbara encouraged me to simply  speak. They attentively listened as I detailed my experiences, ultimately discovering a unifying  thread that brought coherence to my narrative.

Beyond academia, AKALA enabled me to spearhead numerous community projects during  high school. From working with Habitat for Humanity and establishing a school club focused  on serving marginalized communities to organizing book drives for underserved elementary  schools and food drives, the AKALA team’s unwavering support was instrumental. Their  assistance in curating meaningful projects that aligned with my passions significantly enhanced  my service-oriented application profile.

While there are countless examples of how AKALA has been an unparalleled asset throughout  my journey, I hope this testimonial provides a glimpse into their remarkable support.
